How to Post Handmade Ceramics (so it doesn't arrive in pieces!)
Posting fragile ceramics can be a risky business - handing your precious pots over to the postal service and praying that everything will arrive in one piece!
I have been running my ceramics business for over ten years now, and over that time I've developed (dare I say it...) a pretty reliable way of getting pots to their intending destination safely.
That is not to say that this method is 100% fail-safe. Unfortunately, but luckily very rarely for me, things break in transit - it's just one of those things. But hopefully, following a few of these tips below, it'll be a rare occurrence.
For me, there are two very important things.
1. Your order arrives looking beautiful and in one piece!
2. It is packaged using materials that are sustainable, recyclable or re-used.
There are so many eco-friendly options out there now, that there is just no need for plastic tape and bubble wrap anymore.
Here's a step-by-step guide on how I wrap up my ceramics to post.
Firstly, I wrap each item in honeycomb paper. This stuff is AMAZING! I would say even better than its plastic equivalent.
Then, I follow with a layer of corrugated cardboard for extra protection. I tend to go with a double layer over the handle if it's a mug or jug I'm packing - it adds a little extra cushioning to the most vulnerable part of the pot.
Finished off with my logo sticker.
Now, for boxing it up. I always use double-wall boxes - I find single-walled ones are just too flimsy. Although they cost a bit more, I would say the additional cost is worth it. Then you just need to add the best invention ever - compostable packing peanuts. These are just the best - great for fitting around awkward shapes, and fully compostable (or will just dissolve in water).
Then just nestle your pot inside. The key here is to make sure there's enough of a gap between the wrapped-up pot and the side of the box - that's what's going to give you the cushioning whilst the pot is in transit and will absorb any knocks or rough handling.
I seal the box up with my custom "fragile" tape (fully recyclable of course!)
And much cheaper than buying branded boxes - this rubber logo stamp does the same job.
These stickers from StickerMarket add a bit of fun to the box. The matte finish of their art paper stickers fit in perfectly with my other branding.
And there you have it! Well-protected, on brand and good for the planet!
